Dubai to Launch Self-Driving Taxis in 2026
Dubai is set to introduce self-driving taxis, with trials beginning next year and a full commercial launch planned for 2026. This initiative is part of the Roads and Transport Authority’s (RTA) ambitious goal to make 25% of all trips in the city autonomous by 2030.
To achieve this, RTA has partnered with global leaders in autonomous driving technology, including Uber, WeRide, and China’s Baidu through its autonomous mobility arm, Apollo Go. These companies will deploy self-driving taxis in Dubai, initially with safety drivers before transitioning to fully autonomous operations.
Transforming Dubai’s Transport System
Mattar Al Tayer, Director General and Chairman of RTA’s Board, emphasized the significance of these partnerships. “This marks a major step in advancing Dubai’s Self-Driving Transport Strategy. Autonomous taxis will improve connectivity, enhance public transport, and contribute to road safety,” he said.
Self-driving taxis are expected to improve first and last-mile connectivity, making it easier for commuters to reach metro stations and other transport hubs. They also offer significant safety benefits, as human error is responsible for over 90% of traffic accidents. Additionally, these vehicles will provide mobility solutions for seniors, residents, and people of determination.
Global Technology Leaders on Board
Baidu’s Apollo Go has recorded over 150 million kilometers of safe autonomous driving and operates in more than 10 Chinese cities. Since February, its robotaxis have been running fully driverless operations, making it the world’s largest autonomous fleet operator.
Uber’s Global Head of Autonomous Mobility, Noah Zych, expressed excitement about bringing AVs to Dubai, stating, “We are working with top technology partners to deploy autonomous taxis at scale.”
Jennifer Li, CFO of WeRide, sees Dubai as a natural step in the company’s global expansion. “Our advanced technology and operational expertise, combined with Uber’s platform, will help bring self-driving mobility to millions,” she said.
Dubai’s self-driving taxi rollout is a key step in positioning the city as a global leader in smart transport and innovation. As autonomous technology advances, Dubai continues to push boundaries in shaping the future of urban mobility.
